Electric Love
Since my post about Pluto relationships was by far the most liked, it occurred to me that I should devote more posts to relationship astrology. This post in particular is about electric or immediate connections, as opposed to long term relationships or romantic compatibility. I’ll devote other posts to those kinds of relationships.
Admittedly, the main reason I became interested in astrology was because of relationship problems. It started with Linda Goodman’s Love Signs, which focuses on basic Sun sign compatibility. I remember reading ‘Aquarius Man, Taurus Woman’ and I laughed and cried it was so on point.
Having lived long enough to experience and witness a number of love aspects variations, I thought I should share that wisdom here. Again – this post is more about lust or infatuation than about long term relationships.
I titled this post “Electric Love” because of the first lust aspect I want to address: Uranus and Venus in synastry. Typically, the conjunction is felt the most intensely, then the opposition and lastly the square. I will get to the trine later.
The conjunction, especially when it is within 0-2 degrees, feels absolutely like a jolt of electricity. This is about two strangers walking into a room and seeing sparks fly when their eyes first meet. This is the love at first sight aspect in synastry. It is no joke. It certainly feels like love at first sight, but it is something else entirely.
The Venus person usually feels the most vulnerable, since Uranus vibrates at a higher frequency. If the circumstances are right, meaning both persons are unattached, this usually means getting it on as soon as possible. If one or both are attached, then the mystery lover will enter your dreams with shocking regularity. It will be hard to get them out of your mind if you never manage to get together physically.
This aspect really is about electricity. It can bring people together very quickly, but it can separate them just as fast. The tighter the orb, the more intense. It helps to know this when the person you thought would be your one and only true love disappears on you. Uranus-Venus connections are not at all about true or lasting love.
A slightly wider orb in conjunction is a bit more manageable, but it doesn’t have quite the same effect. The opposition sometimes generates even more attraction because of the polarity of opposites, but once again, there’s a separating aspect.
The square is a bit different. One or both partners feels something intense, but they are more private about it. This is an attraction that everyone around them can see, but these two aren’t really sure they want to admit it to themselves or to each other.
The Uranus-Venus trine in synastry deserves its own analysis. This is felt not as much like a thunderbolt but rather a constant, warm flirtation. Especially the tight orbs of 1-2 degrees. This trine aspect in synastry is more manageable in a longer term relationship. You won’t feel it in the first 3 seconds of eye contact, but it quickly builds and remains at a steady, irresistible frequency.
Now, you won’t always feel sexual attraction in Uranus-Venus connections, particularly if you’ve experienced them a lot already. The attraction is there, but it can also be based in friendship. Maybe the Venus person feels more unrequited passion and the Uranus person just isn’t interested. The sparks are still there, just felt in a different context.
Since I have already mentioned Pluto relationships in another post, I won’t delve into those again – mostly because the energy is very different. Pluto energy emerges from the Underworld, rather than immediate electrical impulses.
I will mention Mars quincunx Pluto, though, since I didn’t mention this one yet. The quincunx has a more raw immediacy than the other hard aspects in synastry. Because Mars is involved, it feels more primal. It has to be a maximum 2 degree orb, though. Ideally, a 0-1 degree orb.
So for example, let’s say one person with Mars at 9 degrees Pisces meets another person with Pluto at 9 degrees Libra. The quincunx involves any two signs that are five signs away from each other: Pisces to Libra or Leo; Aquarius to Cancer or Virgo; Scorpio to Aries or Gemini; Capricorn to Gemini or Leo, etc. There’s always an elemental misfire, like water with air/fire or air with water/earth.
The quincunx feels more immediate because it seems instantly unusual or extraordinary. Because Mars is so instinctual, the energy immediately feels like attraction. It may even feel like love at first sight, even if a more awkward version of it.
Mars conjunct Venus, or Mars opposite Venus in synastry can also be very immediate, though it is generally the Mars person who feels it initially. The Venus person can sometimes be taken off guard. The energy won’t be obvious until the two have sex. That is when the electricity becomes clear. Again, the tighter the orb, the more intense. I’m not going to even mention the square, trine or the sextile here because none of them come even close to the same intensity as the conjunction or opposition with this aspect.
I haven’t talked much about the asteroids, but here is one: Eros. Eros in synastry can feel like instant affinity or attraction, though it usually isn’t sexual. It’s more of a cupid’s arrow kind of moment. I wouldn’t call it electric, however, so I hesitate to mention it in this post, but it is instant.
Eros conjunct the Sun or Ascendant in synastry is the most evocative. Eros-Venus maybe – but since Eros in the natal chart reveals the sort of characteristics we find attractive, the Sun and the Ascendant are the most immediate representations of another person’s energy.
Like Uranus-Venus connections, Eros-Sun or Eros-Ascendant connections aren’t enough to sustain any kind of long term feelings. Just like cupid’s arrow can make one feel sudden attraction, the effects can wear off pretty quickly. The planet/angle person often feels it more than the Eros person; as if they feel seen. Resentment soon builds, however, when feeling seen is not a constant. The Eros person can easily desexualize the planet/angle person and lose interest in the attraction.
Eros connections could be analyzed in terms of romantic love but I don’t see it is as a synastry aspect with much staying power. I will do a post on romantic love aspects like Venus-Neptune or Moon-Mars relationships next.
If you read my post about Lilith, you will see why I didn’t include Lilith aspects in an electric love post either. Obsession and control in relationships have plenty in common with Pluto, but Lilith is more of an archetype than the spark of attraction between two people. It is a very unique expression that I don’t equate with typical lust or infatuation.
I think most of the “love asteroids” like Eros, Amor and Lust aren’t nearly as strong as planet connections. They add depth to already powerful synastry aspects, but on their own they tend to be a bit more muted. I’ll write a separate post on love asteroids in synastry.
I think a tight 0-2 degree orb conjunction or trine between two personal planets in synastry, like Moon trine Moon or Moon conjunct Venus can feel really electric and crush-worthy. This can be between platonic friends, but the buzzy-electric feeling is immediate.
